Surfing is a great way to spend time in the sun and familiarize yourself with the beautiful beaches along the Nicoya Peninsula. Proyecto Montezuma holds daily two-hour surf lessons at Playa Grande, a perfect beach break located in the middle of a pristine nature reserve. Students learn how to read waves, balance on the board, and paddle effectively. All surf instructors are bilingual, local Costa Ricans who have a minimum of two years teaching experience, in addition to being active in national and international surf competitions. To ensure a safe and engaging learning environment, each surf class has a maximum of three students per instructor.

Proyecto Montezuma has partnered with SINEM Orchestra Program to provide Music, Art, Dance, English and Physical Education classes for locals kids.

First, we had to clean up the local park:

Physical Education classes are led by volunteer teachers Johnny and Thai. Classes include soccer, dodgeball and American football. Plus, a little jumprope, hula hooping and lots of smiles.

Spanish Immersion courses include course workbook and all needed materials. Our teachers are all native Costa Rican Spanish speakers with formal training and experience. You will learn Spanish grammar and local idioms. Spanish Immersion courses are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced speakers.

Surf & Yoga Retreat Details:
Our surf instructors are all bilingual local Costa Rican surfers with minimum two years teaching experience and training. All of our instructors have competed nationally and are beginning to compete globally. All surf sessions have a maximum of three surfers per instructor, to ensure your safety and guarantee your learning! Surf sessions take place at Playa Grande, a perfect beach break located in the middle of a pristine reserve. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to Playa Grande and the surfboards are ready-and-waiting for you there. Each surf session includes board rental and 2 hours of instruction in the water. Our instructors strive to improve your art of surfing and will challenge you to catch the perfect wave every day!

Yoga Classes & Delicias Public Elementary School

Proyecto Montezuma now serves two public elementary schools! We have been teaching at Montezuma's public school and now work with the public elementary school in Delicias. We are excited to spread quality education to all area's children and to continue to offer volunteer teachers a meaningful and productive volunteer experience. Now, we just need great volunteer teachers to come and share in learning with local kids and adults.

We have added YOGA to our list of programs. Volunteers and travelers can sign up for our unique VinYasa and Acroyoga classes conducted by Kristen. Classes are held every day, some on the beach, some in the studio. Namaste!

Our great team of volunteer teachers and Spanish students ended their great work in January and now we are ready for February! Lead by Amanda, Kim, Jim and Kerstin's teaching, our English classes are going great and our English-language learners are achieving impressive learning objectives. I loved Montezuma and 4 weeks seemed like it was too short of a time! In the month that I was there I met some great friends, took Spanish classes, learned to surf, and learned a lot about a beautiful country. By far, the best part was helping to teach the pre-school English classes- the students were so full of energy and were so much fun! Volunteering with Proyecto Montezuma was also a way for me to meet locals and interact with the community as more than just a tourist. It was such a great experience, and I cannot wait to return to Costa Rica.

Here are some more ways to find us from San Jose/Alajuela, but we recommend taking this challenge after you know your way around Costa Rica and are more familiar with the transportation system (or lack of a system):

Fastest

By Air

There are two companies which offer a 30 minute flight from San Jose to the Tambor Airport. Sansa Air leaves directly from SJO (San Jose International Airport) and Nature Air departs from a small air strip nearby (30 min. drive to Pavas from SJO) and requires an additional shuttle or taxi. Flights can be booked through http://www.flysansa.com/ or http://www.natureair.com/ and cost approximately $22-$99 plus tax and an additional charge of $1/lb. for luggage weighing more than 27 lbs. From Tambor, you can take a taxi which will take approximately 30 minutes to Proyecto Montezuma and cost between $35-$45. If you would like us to arrange pickup in Tambor, a driver will meet you at the airport for the lower price of $35, just email us!

Cheapest & Longest

By Bus

There is daily, direct service between San Jose and Montezuma at the Coca-Cola bus station.
This journey is a game of chance! It takes a minimum of 6 hours (if you hit every bus schedule with luck!), including a 1.5 hour ferry ride from Puntarenas to Paquera.

You must first take a bus ($1) or official (red or orange) taxi ($22) from the airport to the “Coca Cola” bus station. From there, you will take the bus headed for Cobano/Mal Pais/Santa Teresa/Montezuma (the front of the bus may say all of the above beaches/towns or a mixture).

You will be making a stop in Puntarenas to hop on the ferry. After enjoying the views of the Gulf of Nicoya and taking some great photos, your bus will meet you on the other side to bring you to Montezuma. Stay on your toes because you will have to change buses in Cobano for the last 30 minutes of the journey.

The bus and ferry cost approximately $12 combined. Buses depart at 6:00 am and 2:00 pm, but please make sure to call ahead for any schedule changes (this happens often). Reservations are not available, so arrive early for tickets.

Proyecto Montezuma

We accept global volunteers to teach English and extra-curricular classes to local children and adults and to participate in Spanish Language Immersion. Our program is non-profit, volunteer-run and offers classes to local elementary school, preschool, young adults and adults for free. Come and share your talents, participate in positive cross-cultural exchange, study Spanish and have a blast!

In Costa Rica, July is known as "el veranillo" or little summer. Proyecto Montezuma organizes an el veranillo program for local kids during their school vacation. Local elementary and preschool kids practice basic literacy and numeracy skills with Martha, volunteer from Florida.

This weekend, we kayaked and snorkeled around Isla Cabuya. This tour is great for all water-lovers. We meet in Montezuma central and then head south to Cabuya, local fishing village. We hit the water and snorkel amidst beautiful coral reef loaded with colorful, tropical fish. Then, we take a break and hike around the island to learn more about the local floklore and indigenous cementery located on the island. Then, we paddle more and snorkel again...

Our kayak tours start in Montezuma central and we paddle north to Piedra Colorada, or Reserva Nicholas Wessberg. We stop with the guide to learn about the local historical significance of the area and hike up to the secret waterfall. Then, we get back in the water and paddle northward to Playa Grande. This is the local surf spot and a great view of the local flora and fauna from the ocean...

During the hike up to the secret waterfalls, we enjoy an exfoliating mud mask. The mud comes from volcanic rocks. Talk about spa day...

July Vacation Program

With huge help from July's volunteers, Brennan, Martha, Daniella and Layla, Proyecto Montezuma organized a great vacation program (July is known as veranillo, or little summer, and schools are closed for three weeks) for local preschool and elementary school kids. Martha and Daniella organized fundraising efforts in Florida and arrived with a generous amount of school supplies and much needed materials.

This is Angela, local preschooler, learning computer skills with our newly donated One Laptop, One World computer. This computer was delivered and donated by Leora Langs, friend of recent volunteer, Dia. This computer is completely child-proof and child-friendly. Thanks to this kind donation, local kids have the opportunity to learn computer skills that before seemed completely foreign.

Thanks to Dia Meschoulam, recent long-term volunteer from California, local kids made and learned how to hula hoop like a pro! Dia is a World Hoop Ambassador and purchased the materials necessary to make colorful hoops that they now own and use daily. The kids loved making and decorating their individual hoops and now we have "SHOWS" every evening.

Islas Tortugas Snorkel Tour

On one of our recent tours to the magical Islas Tortuga, we stumbled upon an underwater camera and ended up with some great shots. Keep in mind that we only used a disposal camera for these pictures, so just imagine the force of the radiant colors of the coral and the fish that live here. Here are just a few examples of the diverse marine life living here: Parrotfish, Morrish Idols, Angel Fish, Starfish and vibrant coral reef...

You know you want to snorkel here too! Here is deal, the tour is all day, 9:30-4:00, including equipment, boat transportation, lunch with fresh sailfish BBQ, beer, fruit, water and soda. We snorkel in the morning, then head to the white sand beach covered with palm trees to eat lunch and relax. Then we venture out to snorkel again.

Our captain is THE local who invented the tour. He not only knows the area better than anyone else, but he taught the other companies. He goes slow so you can snap great shots and enjoy the coastline. We visit a sunken WWII ship and see El Chorro, the cascade that falls into the sea. Plus, we snorkel at two different spots!

Anniversary of Costa Rica´s First National Park

October is an important month in this area because of the Anniversary of Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural Reserve, the first national park in Costa Rica. This park started the system of conservation that exists today. Visiting this park is one of the main attractions when you visit Montezuma, for we mountain bike from the center of town and then hike and explore the park. One of the unique features of this park is the richness of the water supply. The water falls from the mountains, and seeps into the beach from all reaches of the park. The island, also named Cabo Blanco, is an area rich in aquatic and marine life, plus Brown Bobbies (sea birds). This island holds the largest population of Brown Bobbies in all of Central America.

The name ¨Cabo Blanco¨derives from the enormous amount of bird poop that the Brown Bobbies and other marine birds deposit every day on the rock. Another incredible fact about this island is that a large number of aquatic animals lay their eggs in the Pacific Ocean waters surrounding this island. Thus, this area is full of needed food to regenerate important sea-life.

Here we are ending the bike tour from Montezuma central at the park´s entrance. Biking to this park is highly recommended, for it is the best way to enjoy the beautiful sites from Montezuma to the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula.

September 15th: Independence Day!

For centuries, the Ox Cart has been used in Costa Rica as a means of transportation. This is now a symbol of the local folklore, plus UNESCO has deemed it a mark of Human Patrimony, for its unmistakably beautiful artwork. The carts are decorated by hand painting, drawing and sketching.

The Independence Celebration is heard around the country on September 15th. In Cobano, there is a typical parade of schools and high schools, music, dancers, and much more. The party doesn´t end here...

...the night before, all over the country, students gather to sign the National Anthem, to display and use their ¨faroles¨, or home-made lanterns. The children of all towns gather at dawn and march through town with their lanterns ablaze.

The night lights up with the remembrance of the news of freedom...

The ¨faroles¨come in many different shapes, sizes and designs:

Even though Costa Rica has no official Army, we have formed a group of soldiers with a great cause!

A few days before Independence Day (Sept. 15th), we took 15 trees that were germinating in a small tree farm (our factory, see below!) and planted them in separate pots to grow stronger and healthier.

This is the first of our tours with the kids from the public school. We are working to learn more about the area from the local kids and to help teach them needed tools to secure future jobs. This day, we biked from Montezuma Central to Pura Vida Road and ended at La Florida Waterfall.

Climate Change and How We Are Helping...and How You Can Help, Too

Now, Costa Rica experiences two hard months of RAIN! Currently, the weather is very strange due to storms and climate change. But, this is no obstacle for us to enjoy our nearby amazing places with you. Here, you can see Montezuma´s Waterfall, in explosive form due to recent rain.

Only locals know the safest routes to see this beauty during this (crazy and abnormal!) season, for if you don´t know the trails like the back-of-your-hand, you will be washed away to the sea.

This is one of the first steps of our Bonsai Tree Project with the local public school. Here, the students are shaping the trunks and cutting the branches to make unique bonsai shapes.

Proyecto Montezuma: Agro Ecoturismo, Desarrollo Sostenible

Proyecto Montezuma es un programa de voluntarios y tours sostenibles sin fines de lucro. Localizado en Montezuma, Costa Rica.

Fundado con la esperanza de traer voluntarios capacitados de alrededor del mundo para mejorar la educación de los niños y la calidad de vida de los habitantes locales. A la vez, educar a los turistas para que conozcan el área profundamente de una manera sostenible. Iniciamos el cultivo de estos árboles nativos para lograr fondos para la escuela en un futuro y mejorar el interés de los estudiantes en las demás materias.

Ahora como parte de la UNEP Billion Tree Campaign, los estudiantes muestran mucho más interés para aprender las diferentes técnicas de agroforestería. La Directora de la escuela pública se encuentra tremendamente impresionada del nivel de atención, asistencia y participación de sus estudiantes. Logrando fomentar estas actividades a otros centros educativos.

Here is yet another breathtaking sunrise in Montezuma. This daily scene varies, but always worth the rise!

Semillas Voladoras:
He is trying to see just what it means when we say, Estas Semillas Pueden VOLAR! (these seeds can fly). Below is one of the participants with the current bonsai & hardwoods project, he is in the first grade and is learning how to plant Cortez Amarilla:
Here are more students learning the art of cultivation. In the beginning, these kids were crazily planting these seeds into the earth, but after a little learning they knew exactly what to do to help these seeds grow into beautiful, healthy trees.After learning that these seeds will really fly far, faraway, we knew that we needed to help this process by pushing the seeds into the earth.

Here, all hands are pushing the seeds deep into the earth, or else they will FLY AWAY!
Above, the students also learned the importance of worms to help the process of fertilization, and how to use compost from worms to grow strong trees.

This is the first time this student transplanted a tree. Here, he is learning patience and how to safely place the first two Guancaste trees into their pots.

This is just the beginning of the growth process...

Montezuma´s Waterfalls in the Rainy Season
In this photo above, you can see the first and second waterfalls if you look closely at the top of the picture. During the rainy season, not only is Montezuma lush and green, but there is greater force falling from this beautiful waterfall. We will begin posting monthly photos of the waterfall; for when the seasons change, the changes at the waterfall are amazing too. Deep into this photo, look closely, you can see El Chorro, the cascade falling into the sea. This cascade is 13 meters high. Along with Montezuma´s waterfall, EL Chorro changes greatly with the rain. This ecological tour began at sunset, and after a gorgeous two-hour hike, you arrive at this majestic cascade.

Tea Mangrove, The Beginnings

This is the beginning of one of our Bonsai experiments with the local public school. This is a Tea Mangrove, consider one of the strongest air purifiers on land. We will post more and more photos as this beauty grows and we learn more about cultivating Bonsais.

Here is Ronnie hard at work!

Ronnie is one the leaders of the Agro-Eco Bonsai, Hardwoods & Compost Project. He is learning to make pots for planting by using recycled materials. Here he has collected what would have been trash: plastic ice cream containers, yogurt containers, etc., to use as planting pots for his new trees. Therefore, he is learning not only how to recycle trash into bonsai pots, but also how important it is learn about plant-transplantation and growth cycles. His learning of plant-transplantation includes newfound knowledge that growth cycles are directly connected with the Moon´s cycles.

In addition to the Bonsai project, we are growing corn and yuca at the school. When a small group of students began working with the earth, the entire school was eager to know what was happening. Thus, classes stopped and the entire student body came out to learn what was happening. Even the school´s director came out back and was motivated to work alongside her students!

Bonsai, Hardwood & Compost Project

We have started a project with public school students. These students are learning the art of hardwood bonsais, composting and sustainable art.

Here they are holding seeds that produce amber, Guapinol (Spanish name), Stinking Toe (English name), and they are learning how to transform these beautiful seeds into impressive jewelry and bonsai trees. Plus, they are learning how to cultivate local species. This project has long-term benefits, for we will be able to sell and give local trees to assist reforestation efforts!

Hard & Fun Work-in-Progress

There are now more than 200 Guancaste (the national tree of Costa Rica) seeds growing at the school, and we are eager to watch this magical process take place. In addition, we are teaching and learning how to use organic waste to fertilize seeds naturally. We dug a hole and now place all organic waste there. The public school teacher is very excited about this project, for work like this helps the local students perform better in their classes, for they are learning hands-on.

Montezuma students, girls and boys, now have a real soccer team. This night they competed against Cobano. Montezuma won 8 to 2!

Sunrise Beach CleanUp

This is the sunrise we enjoy every morning here in Montezuma!

From 5:00 until 6:00 am, the sun rises over the sea and exudes rays of colors and warmth. This is a great time to rise and hit the beach.

This morning we took large trash bags and removed a lot of trash (mostly plastics) that now lining the shore. The trash drifts ashore during heavy rains and the last thing we want is for the trash to float back into the sea.

This job is hard, but with a view like this......it is well worth the time!

You can see sunsets just like this every day! This sunset happened in Manzanillo Sandcastle Competition (see more photos below!). This beach is located in Northwestern point of the Nicoya Peninsula.

Here are two photos (above and below) of our work at La Escuela Futuro Verde.
Above is the preschool class, and below are the primary students taking a break from class to pose for a photo! Amazingly, at this international school these youngers speak three languages (and some even FOUR!). We are always seeking volunteers to teach and learn from these wonderful students!

This is the best sandcastle competition in all of Costa Rica! This is Manzanilla Beach located north of Montezuma on the Nicoya Peninsula. The above and below photos are some of the entries from this year´s competition. This is an event that captures the local folklore and culture in a unique way and it happens every year.

When we are not teaching, we are learning new sports! Now, we offer waterskiing tours! This is a great way to explore the area and to practice your surfing skills. We were in Playa Juguetes in the photo below, one of the best points in the peninsula to practice surf.

As a fundraiser for the local public school, we are making new sustainable handicrafts with Costa Rican Drift Seeds with Supersitious Powers. This seeds make gorgeous necklaces and bracelets, which we are now selling to raise funds for the students at the local school. What a great gift!

Proyecto Montezuma now partners with an exciting new school project-

Even though we (the females) look like we are working hard in the sun, really only Johny deserves that credit. He spends every day voluntarily cleaning, fixing and helping where needed at the local school!

The other night we found this hungry animal snacking in this enchanted dry jungle forest. This anteater did not flinch or lose focus as we snapped photos. No, instead he continued to chow down this large nest of termites. Its meal lasted for about 45 minutes, and we were mesmerized the entire time!

Back in Action!

We have been exploring and teaching hard. During our recent explorations, we discovered this sunken ship, Georgia. Here we saw many different species of fish and aquatic wildlife. This ship is huge, in fact it even appears on some maps of the area. Plus, we are seeking new areas for snorkeling adventures and are shocked at the beauty we have found!

School is BACK!

We have started the school off on the right foot this year! Classes are back in session and thanks to a generous donation we have wonderful, new texts to use for teaching English, plus books for the students to enjoy in Spanish. As always, we are desperate for more help, so let us know when you want to work and play in this jungle paradise...
During the summertime, we went walking with endangered Spider Monkeys,
and scuba diving to learn more about the wonderous world under the sea. Plus, during one of our exploration we found new volcanoes under the sea.

SEARCHING FOR WATER

With summer vacation upon us, we have been searching for waterfalls and cool swimming pools to help us beat the heat. Lucky for us, we have been very successful......this is us walking on top of El Chorro, a cascades falling into the Pacific Ocean. This cascade is 13 meters high and the river water lands in a rocky mound of waves. From where we are walking here, we are surrounded by the sound of the ocean, the river, howler monkeys, trees and nothing more. This cascade is where many locals used to jump into the sea, but after an earthquake rolled through town it is impossible to jump for you will surely land atop a rock and be washed away to sea. When standing atop this cascade take your breath is taking away by the power of converging forces of water: the river and the sea mixing together. TRULY AMAZING!

THE LAST SNORKELING TRIP to the AMAZING CORAL REEF in TORTUGA ISLAND

In our quest for cool water, we ventured to Isla Tortuga to say HI! to the many fish and the beautiful coral reef. The trip to Isla Tortuga takes one hour by boat and the views of the coastline and certainly worth it! We snorkeled at this rock for hours and then...
...we waited for lunch to be served! Talk about a dream meal:
Plus, during our recent research we learned that there is an active volcano located 10 meters under the sea. Here are two friends who were brave enough to swim in this interesting force of Mother Nature.

With the Mar Azul, captained by local born and raised in Montezuma, Mocha, we have been able to learn more about the area, the sea and the coastline. This boat and captain are helping Proyecto Montezuma by offering knowledgeable tours all around the Nicoya Peninsula for eager volunteers.

Adventures continue (School´s out for Summer)

In the last tour, we saw a Neo-Tropical Otter swimming under the bridge leading to Montezuma´s waterfalls. These otters are cuter than you can imagine.

Now that it is summer in Costa Rica, Montezuma has come to life! There are bonfires at night, music in the streets and smiles on all the faces! Here is a photo from a recent evening spent chilling in this jungle paradise town: The local artists started a market on the way to the big beach (in Spanish, la playona). Now, as you pass the local school (where we teach) you can enjoy the arts and crafts of the local artists on the same street:

Here is the ending to a beautiful tour that started at La Florida (where you can find a breathtaking farm full of horses and cows, five consecutive waterfalls, a rope swing) and ending in Mal Pais at Playa Carmen. Hiking, swimming, swinging and watching the sunset (see photo above) made for the perfect tour!

This weekend excursion took us from Montezuma's glistening shores, up through the jungle, across rivers and finally landed us in Mal Pais...just in time for the sunset. This weekend trip was the relaxation we needed from a week of teaching, plus gave us some stronger legs and beautiful photos!

Proyecto Montezuma is a not-for-profit Environmental & Educational Volunteer Adventure Project on the breathtakingly beautiful Montezuma beach. Proyecto Montezuma unites passionate Tico activists with globetrotters eager to learn the language and culture while making a contribution. The people living in Montezuma are eager to share their rich Tico culture and beautiful area.

Join us as you TRAVEL LIKE YOU CARE!

Proyecto Montezuma strengthens the local area by: paying fair wages; donating 10% of all profits to local schools; always using sustainable methods and practices; creating positive cultural exchange with locals and conscientious travelers from around the world.

As a volunteer, you choose either to teach classes at the local school or to work on the current environmental project. Classes include English and/or your personal expertise. You also select your Adventures from our personalized sustainable tours. Each participant becomes a member of the Proyecto Montezuma Activists' Club, receiving updates and an opportunity to stay involved by voting on the next upcoming environmental project.

ABOUT US:
Cesar Benavides was raised in Alajuela, Costa Rica, and spent much of his youth exploring the Montezuma area. A passionate Tico environmentalist and activist, Cesar founded Sustainable Development Underground Tours in 2003. His work with Sustainable Development Underground Tours, plus his personal passion to raise environmental awareness, led to expansive knowledge of the Montezuma area and its pressing environmental concerns. Now, Cesar is completing his Guia Naturalista degree while focusing his passions on Proyecto Montezuma.

Kerri Bowers has taught and volunteered all around the globe. Upon completing her Master’s Degree of International Training and Education from The American University, she co-founded, taught and led environmental action programs at Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy in Washington, DC. Proyecto Montezuma is her opportunity to combine her teaching and environmental know how for the sake of the Nicoya Peninsula and the people who live there.
